1924 Coupe Wood

We were contacted by the owner of a 1924 Model T Coupe. His car had been subjected to a previous "restoration" and was in poor condition. While doing research on this car, it was determined that it was a Type I body, which is the earliest variatoin of the 1924 Coupe body. Not only was it a Type I, but it was the lowest serial number 1924 Coupe which we have seen to date. The Type I bodies had some differences in the construction of the wood which makes it unique among the 1924 Coupes.
The previous restorer had replaced the wood framework in the trunk area with 2x4's. We were asked if we could recreate the correct wood for the trunk area, as well as some repair pieces to the wooden sills.

Due to our extensive knowledge of the 1924 Coupe, and that we had patterns for all of the trunk pieces we accepted the project. As we started work on the trunk wood, we were asked to include all new sills and rockers as the rest of the original ones were to badly deteriorated. New sills and cross members were constructed, and the entire trunk section was fabricated. All pieces were assembled to insure proper fit before shipping to the customer.

Once the customer received the sills and trunk wood, we were asked to duplicate the passenger's side hinge pillar. The one in the car was in two pieces with a strip of angle iron bolting them together. It was obvious when we received the origial pieces that they were not Ford pieces but something which had been crafted by the previous restorer. A new pillar was fabricated using patterns we had here. When the customer received the pillar, the sheet metal covering the pillar would not fit the pillar. After additional research it was determined that the previous restorer had used the pillar covers off of a 1923 Fordor sedan and had fabricated the hinge pillars to fit. The 1923 Fordor used a narrower pillar than the later cars which meant that the pillars would not fit the cowl correctly.
The customer located the correct pillar covers and a new driver's side pillar was fabricated to the correct dimensions. Also, a new front belt rail and instrument panel board were fabricated.

The customer also needed a new rear belt rail and the framework around the rear window. These were fabricated from patterns we had on hand.
