Transmission Band Clamp and Wrench Instructions

The 3816-TCW band clamp and wrench is used during the installation of the transmission cover to hold the transmission bands tight around the drums. This allows the band ears to be in the proper location when the transmission cover is installed. It also holds the band ears together while the band springs, washers and nuts are installed.
When using this tool it is important to remove it prior to the final seating and bolting down of the transmission cover. There is not enough room between the bottom of the bosses on the transmission cover and the band ears for this tool. If the tool is not removed when the transmission cover is bolted down it will trap the tool between the bosses on the cover and the band ears making it very difficult or impossible to remove.

The instructions for installing the bands and the transmission cover using this tool are discussed in the Ford Service Manual in paragraphs 516 - 518. A summary of those instructions are provided here.

1. Position the bands around the transmission drums with the ears pointing up.
2. Squeeze the band ears together so that the bands are tight against the drums.
3. Install the clip across the band ears to hold them against the drums.
4. Position the transmission cover over the transmission. Make sure the clutch release ring is inserted into the rear groove on the clutch shaft.
5. Lower the transmission cover until the band ears are along side the bosses on the transmission cover.
6. With a screw driver, compress the band springs between the ears on the bands.
7. Install the band washers on the Reverse and Brake bands. The washers should be installed on the outside of the band ear with the lugs pointing towards the nuts.
8. Install the band nuts on the Reverse and Brake Bands. The lugs on the washers should fit into the notches on the nuts.
9. Install the slow speed adjusting screw.
10. Remove the band clamp.
11. Force the transmission cover all the way down until it seats against the engine pan.
