"Famous" No. 1
32" Band Saw

Restoration of the Upper Wheel Mount

Upper Wheel Bearing.

The upper wheel rides in a 7 1/2" long babbetted bearing. When the saw was purchased it was noted that there was vertical movement in the upper wheel. This is a sure indication that the babbett is worn. Upon disassembly, the babbet was indeed very worn. Apparently this saw had been run for quite a period of time with no oil in the upper bearing. The oil cup was found to be packed with saw dust.

On the wheel side of the bearing, most of the babbett on the bottom has worn away and migrated to the top.

The babbett in the bearing cap actually looks fairly good (under all that extra babbett).
